NH Veto Override Day: The ResultsA Message From ABC NH/VT President Josh Reap
September 24, 2919
Last week in Concord, the state Legislature took up many of Governor Sununu’s veto messages. New Hampshire Democrats and their legislative majority were only able to overturn just one of Sununu’s 55 vetoes. Despite the partisanship of the State House, some common ground was found with new laws on suicide prevention training, increased penalties for animal cruelty and banning offshore drilling.
Among the bills that the governor vetoed this year was SB271, a measure that would have added a questionable form of state prevailing wage regulations and costs to state public work and local work receiving state assistance. ABC applauded the Governor for vetoing this bill and thanks members of the Legislature who sustained the veto.
There is some optimism that the Legislature and Governor can come to an agreement in the next few weeks to end the state budget impasse. ABC will continue to monitor the situation.
