First Apprentices Graduate from Vermont’s Newest Multi-Employer Commercial Craft Apprenticeship Program

Graduating Class includes Three Vermonters from Two Employers

Burlington, VT (June 20) – Associated Builders & Contractors NH/VT Chapter (ABC) and ReSOURCE conducted a graduation ceremony, June 20, for three apprentices graduating from the inaugural class of the association’s new carpentry apprentice program.

“We are excited for the graduates of our carpentry apprenticeship program,” said Josh Reap, President & CEO of ABC. “They came into this program with an interest and today graduate as journeyworkers in their craft. These individuals chose to be part of something bigger than themselves and we are proud of them!”

"Taking this course gave me an opportunity to learn the more academic side of the trades,” said Caley Martin, an apprentice with Bread Loaf Corporation. “Getting to learn the same subject at the same time as my peers enabled us to reinforce each other's learning. The wonderful instructors kept it interesting and helped us get a holistic understanding of the building trades from foundation to roof. I hope more students are able to get this opportunity. Big thanks to Bread Loaf for enrolling me."

The Commercial Craft Apprenticeship Program teaches apprentices carpentry skills in a safe, controlled environment. Registered apprenticeship helps people develop their craft faster than stand alone on the job training.

The program required students to complete 310 hours of classroom instruction while working full time for 18 months. Over the course of the program, apprentices also receive wage increases as they master their skills. The program is jointly run by ABC and ReSOURCE and includes several Vermont general contractors that want to solve the workforce shortage by taking an active role in training Vermonters who want to get into a construction career.

Furthermore, I gained a deeper appreciation for teamwork and the thorough process necessary for completing a successful project,” said Trenten Mead, Carpenter Apprentice with ReArch Company. I’m eager to apply what I’ve learned and be a greater asset in the field. This graduation is just the beginning of the meticulous process of mastering carpentry.”

Founded in 2007, the Future Leaders in Construction (FLiC) program is a leadership development initiative designed for both emerging leaders and established professionals who are committed to making a significant impact in their work and personal lives. Whether you are working in the field or in the office, FLiC offers a unique and enriching experience by bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds and experiences, fostering a rich environment for learning and growth.

At the heart of the FLiC program is the aim to develop a deeper understanding of oneself, which is the cornerstone of understanding and leading others effectively. Through a series of comprehensive assessments, including DISC (behavioral preferences), listening, conflict styles, and team dynamics, participants can identify their personal leadership styles. This self-awareness lays the groundwork for improving essential communication and listening skills, which are crucial for effective leadership.

FLiC was developed by Jennifer Landon, M.ED, VP of Education and Workforce Development at the Associated Builders and Contractors NH/VT. "The Future Leaders in Construction program is about more than just building skills; it's about building people,” says Landon. “Our goal is to empower both emerging and established professionals to become visionary leaders who can inspire and drive positive change in their workplaces and communities. By fostering a deep understanding of oneself and others, enhancing communication, and cultivating a positive and healthy work culture, we are shaping the future of the construction industry, one leader at a time."

Landon, along with co-facilitators Susan Losapio, PhD, and Dr. Sophia Koustas, teaches two FLiC programs, one in New Hampshire and another in Vermont. Participants attend eight full-day classes over an eight-month period, culminating in a graduation celebration in June. Associated Builders & Contractors NH/VT Announces Educational Series During May for Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Associated Builders & Contractors NH/VT (ABC NH/VT) is proud to announce the launch of "Breaking the Stigma", a series of workshops aimed at promoting mental health awareness and well-being within the construction industry.

Taking place every Wednesday throughout the month of May, "Breaking the Stigma" will feature engaging and informative presentations on various topics related to mental health and total human health. These sessions will cover critical areas such as substance use disorders, suicide prevention, psychological safety on the jobsite, and hard hat health.

ABC Hosts Trench Safety Summit

Concord, NH – In construction, the hazards of trenches are well-known, yet far too many workers continue to be injured or killed during excavation work. According to OSHA, trench collapses, or cave-ins, are more likely than other excavation-related incidents to result in worker fatalities. It only takes seconds to become buried in thousands of pounds of soil.

The Associated Builders and Contractors NH/VT Chapter, in partnership with the OSHA Training Institute Education Center, hosted a Trench Safety Summit in Concord, NH to address these risks and provide resources to help keep workers safe. Galen Blanton, the US Department of Labor OSHA Regional Administrator, was in attendance to help raise awareness of this important issue, along with leadership from the ABC.

“Our training today is about empowering people with knowledge to be jobsite leaders in trench safety,” said Josh Reap, president and CEO of ABC NH/VT. “It’s incumbent upon everyone working in and around a trench to know the conditions to protect human life from even the slightest risk of cave-ins, which are avoidable with the right equipment and training. We are pleased to see so many employers and their employees are committed to fostering that mindset and it’s that commitment to safety and full human health which makes this one of the best industries to work in.”

ABC, OSHA, Concord Fire, Dig Safe, NH Dept. of Energy and more than 22 employers came together for the Trench Safety Summit to participate in classroom and live outdoor demonstrations. ABC NH/VT was honored to host a celebration on June 2 recognizing the accomplishments of graduates and participants from the chapter's education and Safety Awards programs. "It’s great to see so many of our members invest in their workforce and be committed to creating a safety culture of excellence," said Joshua Reap, ABC NH/VT president.

This year’s Future Leaders in Construction (FLiC) and Construction Supervision Certificate program were among the largest since the pandemic and had a lot of emerging stars in our industry.

ABC Members Invested $1.6 Billion in Construction Workforce Education to Upskill 1.3 Million in 2021

WASHINGTON, May 4—Associated Builders and Contractors member contractors invested $1.6 billion to provide more than 1.3 million course attendees with craft, leadership and safety education in 2021, according to its 2022 Workforce Development Survey, up from $1.3 billion in 2020. The annual assessment quantifies the scope of ABC members’ workforce development initiatives to advance their employees’ careers in commercial and industrial construction to build the places where Americans live, work, learn, heal and play.

Safety education accounted for the greatest share—56%—of total workforce investment. Investment in craft education increased significantly to 34% of the total in 2021, up from 22% in 2020, responding to the need for an estimated 650,000 additional construction workers in 2022. General and construction management contractors boosted their share of the total workforce development investment to 65% in 2021 from 58% in 2020.

“ABC member contractors are building the people who build America by investing billions to cultivate their long-term skill sets, creating a brighter future for their workers and their families,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC’s vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “ABC member contractors are investing in flexible, competency-based and market-driven education methodologies to build a construction workforce that is safe, skilled and productive. Continually upskilling our people, our most valuable asset, means the merit shop construction industry is ready to realize the economic gains of the $1.2 trillion 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.”

Every $1 billion in extra construction spending generates an average of at least 3,900 new jobs.

Key findings from the survey include:

ABC member contractors invested an average of 7.4% of payroll on workforce education, or $112,412.
Women in management/supervisory roles ticked up to 19% in 2021 from 17% in 2020, and women in craft/trade roles increased from 14% to 15%.
ABC members educate almost four times as many trade/craft personnel than the next highest positions, field managers/superintendents.
ABC members invested in safety education for 51 employees, on average.
More than half of respondents (61%) reported a labor shortage of severe or very severe, citing an exodus of baby boomers as the top contributor.

ABC’s all-of-the-above approach to workforce development has produced a network of ABC chapters and affiliates across the country that offer more than 800 apprenticeship, craft, safety and management education programs—including more than 300 government-registered apprenticeship programs across 20 different occupations—to build the people who build America.

Industry consulting firm FMI conducted the 2022 Workforce Development Survey from Jan. 4 to Feb. 18, 2022. Aggregated data was derived by calculating the average amount spent on education by each respondent and multiplying that by the total number of ABC contractor members.

ABC NH/VT Expands Basic Construction Law Program

The Associated Builders and Contractors of NH/VT, in partnership with law firm Bernstein, Shur , Sawyer & Nelson has expanded their Basic Construction Law program to allow greater flexibility for interested individuals.

The program, now in it's third year, was created by Kelly Gagliuso, Esq. and is taught by a team of attorneys with active construction practices. Basic Constuction Law was offered as a six-part series for individuals intersted in delving into topics ranging from job documentation and health riders to mechanic's liens and dealing with OSHA.

Jennifer Landon Promoted to Vice President of Education & Workforce Development

Associated Builders and Contractors New Hampshire/Vermont Chapter (ABC), a leader in the construction industry and workforce development, has announced the promotion of Jennifer Landon to Vice President of Education & Workforce Development. Landon has been with the ABC since 2017, previously holding the position of Director of Education and Workforce Development.

With this new role, Landon will continue to lead the education and workforce efforts of the ABC as well as the new responsibility of serving as Advisor for the Construction Sector Partnership Initiative (SPI). SPI is an industry-driven statewide initiative to help businesses address their workforce needs, while also helping workers prepare for and advance in careers in construction.

“With Jennifer’s deep understanding of the workforce shortage and expertise developing career pathways, she will work toward developing a robust initiative focused on creating and implementing pathways to career advancement, training, and employment within the construction sector,” said ABC president Joshua Reap. “Her proven leadership and nuanced understanding of education and industry is the edge stakeholders need to solve the workforce shortage.”

Education Series: A Contractor’s Guide to Federal Labor Law Compliance

ABC NH/VT is pleased to announce a new educational series that will provide important information about labor laws and compliance and their impact on contractors.

The series, "A Contractor’s Guide to Federal Labor Law Compliance: An Overview of Three Acts Enforced by the Wage & Hour Division", will be offered via Zoom. The series will be facilitated by Brian Cleasby, Community Outreach and Resource Planning Specialist with the US Department of Labor's Wage & Hour Division. The series open to members and non-members and registration is $15 per person.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

The presentation will cover the minimum wage, overtime, child labor, and hours worked requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act, with particular focus given to the construction industry. Register

ACE Mentor Program of New Hampshire, Denron Trade Scholarship awarded

The ACE Mentor Program of New Hampshire is an after-school program designed to engage, excite, and enlighten high school students to pursue careers in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. The Denron Plumbing and HVAC Trade Scholarship is awarded to one graduating senior who exhibits exceptional engagement in each year’s program in addition to submitting a very well written essay and application. The ACE Mentor Program of New Hampshire announced that Winnacunnet High School Student, Ashleigh Trimarco, was selected to receive the 2020 Denron Plumbing and HVAC Trade Scholarship.

ACE NH Vice Chair Brian Knox and Denron President, Joel Pickering presented the scholarship as a part of the Winnacunnet HS Awards night virtual scholarship awards ceremony of which this message was shared.

“A huge congratulations to Ashleigh Trimarco on her ACE NH/Denron Plumbing and HVAC Trade Scholarship Award. Ashleigh was fully committed to the 2019-2020 ACE NH program and will be attending Southern Maine Community College in their Architectural and Engineering Design Program in the fall of 2020. The entire ACE NH board and mentors want you to know that we are proud of Ashleigh and excited for her future in our industry.” Said Brian Knox, Sr. Project Manager at PROCON and Vice Chair of ACE NH

This summer Ashleigh and her family were met by the Winnacunnett High School Principal, William McGowan, ACE NH Mentors and Denron to receive a big check and celebrate the award.

Ashleigh stated “Thank you to ACE NH and Denron for this amazing scholarship to help me with my double major in Architectural and Engineering design at Southern Maine Community College. Participating in ACE NH was such an amazing experience to see the collaboration of the Architects, Engineers and Construction Managers working seamlessly together in one team. The experience of working with Oyster River High School students was excellent because I was able to see a lot of different ideas come to the table for an even better outcome.”

Ashleigh’s father, Dan Trimarco beamed with pride “Honestly, Ashleigh is one of the first kids from our family to go to college. We are so proud of her.”

Joel Pickering, President of Denron states “Congratulations to Ashleigh! We are very proud to recognize her as the Denron Scholarship recipient this year. She is a very inquisitive, bright student and stood out during the ACE Oyster River Auditorium project. We are glad to be a part of the beginning of her career in the ACE Industry.”

ACE Mentor Program of New Hampshire launched its pilot program at Oyster River High School in Durham, NH in 2019 and this year included a second year program at Oyster River which included students from Winnacunnet high school and another program was started in the Manchester school district with Memorial high school and the Manchester School of Technology. The ACE Mentor Program is a national not-for-profit 501(c)3 and free after school program. Their mission is to engage, excite, and enlighten High School Students to pursue careers in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) through mentoring and to support their continued

advancement in the Industry. Last year the Oyster River High School Students embarked on a two-month project where they learned hands-on, real life skills associated with ACE fields as they relate to the Moharimet Elementary School renovation project and this year’s project was focused on a new or renovation Auditorium project.

Principal William McGowan said that “ACE is a great program and had a large impact on our students at both Winnacunnet High School and Oyster River High School. They were able to work in the field, applying what they learned in the classroom, with hands on learning from top professionals in the field. We are proud of the partnership and collaboration with NH ACE, local businesses and Oyster River high school that has a great impact on students in this region.”

The ACE Board and mentors are made up of a group of industry professionals who believe in mentoring students to give them a real worldview of what goes into a construction project and inspire them to further pursue a career in one of the ACE related fields. At the end of each ACE NH Program, there are typically student presentations held (cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and a local ACE NH sponsored scholarship awarded to one deserving senior enrolled in the program.

The ACE Mentor Board of New Hampshire is currently seeking sponsors, scholarships, and mentors in order to branch out and make additional school programs a reality around the State of NH. COVID-19: Mitigating the Risk of Material Price Escalation

Synopsis: Current economic conditions, pandemic, and recent changes to trade policy governing the importation of goods crucial to construction activities—aluminum, steel, fuel, etc.—have had a significant impact on the cost of these and other goods in recent years. As a result, owners and developers must be prepared with strategies to mitigate the risk of material price escalation in order to preserve the feasibility and profitability of their projects. There are a series of risk-mitigation strategies available at different stages of a project. The most effective risk-mitigation strategy, however, is the inclusion of a thoughtfully drafted material price escalation clause in the contract itself.

Vermont: Mandatory Safety Training Now Available

Construction contractors can resume working in Vermont, if they follow new state safety requirements. It’s easy and ABC will help you.

Addendum 11 to the Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order included a directive that by May 4th, all employees returning to work according to Phased Work Safe Guidelines, including those already working, must complete a mandatory training on health and safety requirements as provided by VOSHA, or another training program that meets or exceeds the VOSHA-provided standard. The Department of Labor has posted training materials in both online and printable formats.

Take the online training now to become compliant with the state’s mandatory training for all workers.Once your employee(s) review and become familiar with the material, they need to complete, print and carry this certificate with them on every jobsite. Every employee needs to complete this training by May 4.

ABC has arranged training designed for safety officers, supervisors, foremen and crew leaders. The training covers an industry-developed plan that exceeds the VOSHA-provided standard and will provide jobsite leaders with safety governance documents, tool box talks and more. It will last approximately 1.5 hours. The training is FREE but registration is required.
